Harbour Town Lighthouse in Hilton Head

Charles Fraser was the man who first envisioned the Sea Pines Resort as “an intimate harbor village with low-country ambiance seasoned by the influence of the small distinctive ports along the coast of southern France and Italy.” The now very popular resort area is the fruition of his dreams.

The focal point of that resort is the Harbour Town Lighthouse. It is the first privately financed lighthouse to be built since the early 1800′s and was constructed on Hilton Head Island in 1970. Fraser modeled it after a lighthouse in Lancastershire, England. The Harbour Town Lighthouse is a 90-foot tower that sits on the harbor in Sea Pines resort. With its eye catching red and white stripes, visitors don’t feel their trip to Hilton Head is complete without making a stop here. The Lighthouse provides a gorgeous panoramic view of Hilton Head Island and Harbour Town.

Bicycling the Plantation in Hilton Head

Hilton Head Island has been described as the Beach Biking Capital of the South Eastern United States. What better way to discover all that Hilton Head, South Carolina has to offer than taking a bicycle ride through this wonderful island rich in plantation history. Cyclists can get their daily workout at a leisurely pace, as they enjoy a portion of the expansive public biking paths around the island. Bicyclers are in abundance in the area and include locals and visitors alike. All types and sizes of bikes can be seen in Hilton Head from regular bicycles, specialty bikes, recumbent bikes, those with baby carriers, attachable kiddie carts or training wheels and even bicycles built for two!

Bike riding in Hilton Head, SC is a huge attraction. Anyone who has ever experienced the area has been witness to people of all ages enjoying the outdoors along the nearly fifty miles of pathways and nature trails that intertwine throughout this location. The island is by and large a very flat area, making it ideal for cyclists. There are very few places that cannot be reached by riding on a bike. Everyone who is physically able, really should plan some time to take a ride on the island during their stay.

Coastal Discovery Museum in Hilton Head

The Coastal Discovery Museum in Hilton Head, located on the historic and beautiful Honey Horn Plantation of Hilton Head Island, provides a huge variety of opportunities to discover the fascinating ecology and history of this coastal area. Exhibits, tours, cruises and interactive programs all work together to offer a stimulating education to visitors and local residents.

The museum inhabits three acres of land in Honey Horn on the north side of the island. This location furnishes a view of Jarvis Creek and the salt marsh. A trail with a deck runs along the marsh with postings that provide interesting information about this rich environment. The deck, with a view of the Intracoastal Waterway in the distance, is a great place to stop and have lunch.

Throughout the grounds, outdoor exhibits display a native collection of island flora, while intermingling important historical facts. Models of the original saxon vats used to create indigo dye in the 1700′s are displayed. Indoor and outdoor exhibits allow for year round enjoyment of the museum. The Sea Island Classroom provides activity centers, while the History Time-line Exhibit displays intriguing island yore.

Hilton Head Beach

The beaches of Hilton Head, SC Island have been named as one of the top ten beaches in the country. And for very good reason! These beautiful natural beaches provide the perfect location for numerous water activities, sunning on the pure white sand, walking, jogging, fishing and splashing in the cool clear water.

Hilton Head is not a large island, as it measures only 12 miles long by 5 miles wide. In spite of its quaint size, it is packed full of fun and interesting activities. The all time favorite spot to whittle away the hours is right on its celebrated beaches.

Most areas of Hilton Head beach provide a gentle slope into the water allowing quite a bit of space to walk out before getting in too deep. Be sure to watch for tidal holes though, as they can be quite deep and sudden. On the other hand, you won’t see much surfing at Hilton Head. Those nice gradual slopes keep the wave action away from the shore. Bike riding on the beach is very popular. The sand below the mid tide line is packed hard enough to provide traction for bikes with wide beach tires, which are available for rent throughout the island.

Harbour Town Golf Links Course at Sea Pines Resort

For serious golfers, Harbour Town Golf Links Course at Sea Pines Resort in Hilton Head is THE “must play” course. It was designed in 1969 as a collaboration between the famed designer Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus. Dye returned again to give the course an update in 2000. Harbour Town Golf Links course is renowned as the home of the Heritage Classic PGA golf tournament. Now named the Verizon Heritage, this tournament attracts many golf legends such as Palmer, Nicklaus and Norman.

It is said that this PGA golf course in Hilton Head is a true test of the game of golf. With beautiful Bermuda grass fairways, the narrow Tifeagle greens of this course can be a bit deceptive. They are among the smallest greens of any tournament course in the country. They require tactful shots and skillful aim to maintain good scores.

Water placement offers challenges on many of the holes. The par-3′s are considered to be right up there with the best in the world. The course from the Heritage tees measures a total of 6,973 yards, has a slope of 146 and a par of 71. It is often thought to be rather short compared to most courses, but it requires a level of preciseness and accuracy that is rarely demanded. Golfers should come ready with their top game, as their shots will need to be seamlessly positioned and and their aim meticulous.
