The Sage Room restaurant in Hilton Head, South Carolina is truly a gem among eating establishments. When you discover a restaurant with the exemplary reputation such as that of the Sage Room, who does not even have to advertise, you know you have found a true gem. This upscale dining experience offers amazing ambiance along with tantalizing cuisine. Guests appreciate the individual features of this restaurant. The first thing most notice upon entering is the open kitchen that is located in the center of the dining area. It is surrounded by a bar that seats ten guests. These seats of distinction provide a close up view of the creation of numerous exquisite dishes. The chefs carry on pleasant conversation with diners and are happy to answer any questions they may have. It is quite a unique, up close and personal experience.
The menu is simple, yet extravagant. It provides a list of about a dozen items with as many appetizers. The daily specials round out the menu to provide a more than adequate selection.
Appetizers at the Sage Room can be as conventional as a Caesar’s salad with white anchovies, or more eclectic with the Tuna Tataki that is pepper seared over ancho aioli with Asian cucumber salad. The Rosemary Skewered Shrimp, Crab Cake, Three Onion Soup, delicious Butternut Squash Soup and Sage Room Salad are all very tasty options. The unique and popular Snow Pea Martini consists of sauteed snow peas with a pineapple soy reduction.
And if that was not tempting enough, it just keeps getting better with the outstanding array of entrees. Steak lovers will find the House Filet to be an excellent choice. It is a prime filet mignon with rosemary shrimp, smashed potatoes and vegetables over a roasted tomato burgundy sauce. For the larger appetite, the Reserve Ribeye is an enormous 32 ounce bone-in ribeye with bleu cheese potato au gratin and a vegetable. The Sage Room Benedict offers a filet mignon, poached egg and smashed potatoes with Bearnaise sauce. Other delicious choices are braised short ribs, champagne poached halibut, pork tenderloin and Colorado lamb.
The wine list, like the rest of the menu, is not extensive, but the offerings are excellent. And the desserts…. For chocolate lovers, they have the triple chocolate mousse cake with caramel and fresh whipped cream. Then there’s the classic southern key lime pie, vanilla custard topped with berries, and the Grand Marnier Caramelized strawberries over toasted angel cake with fudge drizzle.
The Sage Room has many attributes often found in the most treasured restaurants; a menu that is not overly expansive but still offers a diverse selection of culinary works of art, consistent freshness and exquisite taste, a classy and selective wine list, friendly and impeccable service by the staff and an atmosphere that is unique and welcoming.
This is an excellent dining choice for a romantic evening such as a honeymoon or anniversary dinner or dinner among family and friends with mature teens. Diners will walk away with the impression of having experienced magnificent food and impeccable service. And don’t forget the reservations!
