Hilton Head Island has been described as the Beach Biking Capital of the South Eastern United States. What better way to discover all that Hilton Head, South Carolina has to offer than taking a bicycle ride through this wonderful island rich in plantation history. Cyclists can get their daily workout at a leisurely pace, as they enjoy a portion of the expansive public biking paths around the island. Bicyclers are in abundance in the area and include locals and visitors alike. All types and sizes of bikes can be seen in Hilton Head from regular bicycles, specialty bikes, recumbent bikes, those with baby carriers, attachable kiddie carts or training wheels and even bicycles built for two!

Bike riding in Hilton Head, SC is a huge attraction. Anyone who has ever experienced the area has been witness to people of all ages enjoying the outdoors along the nearly fifty miles of pathways and nature trails that intertwine throughout this location. The island is by and large a very flat area, making it ideal for cyclists. There are very few places that cannot be reached by riding on a bike. Everyone who is physically able, really should plan some time to take a ride on the island during their stay.

Maps are readily available that show an overall view of the public paths of the island, along with up close views of particular areas to help show the way. The maps can be found at the numerous kiosks located along the biking paths. Pedestrian walkers and joggers also use the trails as they take in the beauty of the natural landscape.

Many of the private neighborhoods provide their own paths for bikers that are only available to the residents and guests of those communities. These paths and shared roadways within the various communities make up an additional 50 miles of riding space. So as you can see, bicycling on Hilton Head Island is quite a fashionable event. It provides an efficient and enjoyable method to get around without fighting the traffic.

While traveling the various routes, bicyclists will come across quite a few interesting areas where they can stop to rest and take in the activities, history and beauty. From oodles of parks, to recreation centers and pools, a boat landing and fishing pier, the choices are numerous. One of the stops bikers can plan their ride around is Honey Horn. This protected green space locale is the home of the Coastal Discovery Museum. Other entertaining stops include Cordillo tennis courts, Barker Field sport complex and Xeriscape Interpretive Garden Park. Xeriscape attracts visitors with its luxuriant landscapes that incorporate effective water conservation methods. A bike ride in Hilton Head would not be complete without a ride along some of the world’s finest beaches at low tide. Just a tip for those beach riders, be sure to check the wind direction. Riding against the wind is similar to riding up hill, so if you’re not looking for a big workout, ride like the wind!
